Photo Poetry

Ellen Weijers-Gigourtaki published her poetry collection “Another Sea “
(photos with poems) in 2004. “Another Sea “was published on the occasion
of her photography exhibition of the same name, on Crete, Greece.
"Another Sea" originally was published under the Greek name “Μια άλλη Θάλλασσα.”
The title was used to emphasize the difference between a Dutch sea
landscape and a Greek one.
All photographs were taken on the island of “Schouwen Duiveland” in the Netherlands.
More photos of this exhibition can be seen in the category photography.

Seadance

Frothy tide rises, shapes the shore.
Wet shiny sand reflects more,
rolling waves accelerate;
thunder-like sounds
celebrate.
Salty, wet air and sea song
mating in the tide age-long.

Divine Colour

God paints
and drops a can
on unblemished
still-wet sand;
let's pick it up,
colour the world.

Low Tide

A dog throws barks
down a beach.
A girl carries shoes,
her feet leave marks.

A girl and dog duet.
Their prints break sand
between dunes and sunset.

Outer edge silence
floats above the sand;
the sea, far out
sings with soft cadence.

The Gate

Voyage around the world to unknown shores,
to new, uncertain ways.
At the edge of the Mediterranean, I will stay.
On this island, I can be everywhere, I can be free.
Τo become sea or sky, leaf, stone or flower.
Ι whisper prayers for my homeland,
as the waves kiss the sand.

Dreams' Mirror
I desire union,
flow with salt water,
to hide in seashells,
spiral back onto sand.
Sculpture with passion,
of the wind twisting
through the sand.
To build new worlds,
reflecting light
;
to awaken, renewed,
on the beach of dreams.

Winged Words
Magnificent mass of water,
wedded to my soul;
if were I a seagull,
I would fly the winds
entwined with the flow.
Seeking out more
boundless sea,
soaring high,
shrieking in flight,
feeling free.
Winds touch my soul
as I dive down in delight;
waves whisper love.
I would like to stay
but I am only a mortal in flight
.

Still Soldiers
Wooden poles
break the waves
panoplied with
grey-green
mussel uniforms
Silently on duty
without violence
with their strength
protecting the
Low Lands.

Twilight
Listen to the summer breeze,
late sun on the sea,

Long whispers of waves
οn a voyage of discovery.

Knife-edged horizon
promises tomorrow in its twilight.

Friendship

Gazing into the distance
meditating on our long beach,
faces turned into the wind.

Sea washed timbers,
and empty paint cans
create our bench.

Captivated by beauty,
breathless adoration,
we live for the loveliness of moments.

How pleasant to sit on the beach with you.

God's Home
I am one in a row; which one?
You are next to a gap; which one?
Darkness hides the connection
between things.
Darkness-source of our fear
home of God.
God is in our darkness
connecting things.

The Veil
Waves of stillness
pass us from time to time
like speckles of sunlight
over the sea on hazy days.
A quick glimpse
behind the veil.
Take it as long as it lasts,
like a kiss or a wave.
Live the Νow.
Stay moment stay,
you are so beautiful.

Harvest Time

Fish jump in the evening light,
silver swords in eternal motion.
A man in solitude,
along the water-line.
His soul searches for freedom
for just a few moments of the day.
Waves play with his thoughts
visions saturate his mind.
He harvests essence
from liberty's breeze.

Etchings

The hand of God
inscribes the sand.
His etchings lie engraved on my shore.
His nature's marvels bring joy,
rippling patterns to enrich my life.

Thank you God,
for your unsteady hand.
